Our Rating:

Keto Chow is one of the newer keto or low carb friendly products that's appeared as keto has exploded in popularity as a diet. It's an attractive proposition: an easy to make shake that tastes like 'melted ice cream' and contains 1/3rd of your daily nutrients.

That said, since you'll have to order it online and depending on where you live it can be quite expensive to get your hands on, you might have reservations trying it. Below I'll cover many of the common questions that come up around keto chow, and review it after using it regularly for many months!

Who Is Keto Chow Best For?

Keto Chow is a unique product. It's one of the few keto friendly meal replacement shakes available, but also contains a portion of the daily nutrients you need for the day, so you aren't likely to end up deficient in vitamins or macro-nutrients when you're drinking it in place of a normal meal.

One of the biggest benefits of this product is how easy it is to prepare and consume. It's as simple as adding water, the fat source of your choice (typically heavy cream or avocado oil), and a scoop of keto chow to a blender bottle and shaking it up. While you can drink it right away, it only gets better after a few hours in the fridge and takes on the thickness and texture of a milkshake.

As a result of this, it's a great meal to take on the go when you're on a keto or low carb diet, as long as you have an insulated thermos or bottle to keep it cool. Personally, I take keto chow with me when I'm going out with friends or family if I don't know if I'll be able to easily find food that's keto friendly. When I'm working from a coffee shop, I bring it with me and use it to keep me charged up throughout the day.

As you can probably guess, Keto Chow is aimed at people who are trying to stay in ketosis or are on a low carb, high-fat diet, but it generally makes for a delicious shake all on its own.

How do You Make Keto Chow?

Preparing keto chow is really easy, as you'll see in the videos the creator, Chris Bair has put up on Youtube. Essentially, all you need is water, your choice of a liquid fat, and keto chow.

The most simple method is to take a shaker bottle, measure your water, add your fat source (like whipping cream), add your keto chow powder of choice, and shake it all up! Then either consume it immediately or even better stick it in the fridge for a few hours. After it's had some time to sit, you'll find it has a milkshake-like consistency with a thickness depending on how much cream you add.

I like to mix up my keto chow in the evening and leave it overnight. Then it's ready to put in a HydroFlask in the morning and I can enjoy it later in the day when I'm out and about.

If you're drinking keto chow for multiple meals a day or for multiple people, you can make it in bulk. Mix up multiple servings in a blender, or with a pitcher and using an immersion blender to mix it all up.

Once mixed, you can keep keto chow in the fridge for multiple days, though it's best to consume it within 3 days in my opinion.

How Tasty Really Is Keto Chow?

I've often seen the taste and texture of Keto Chow compared to melted ice cream, and I have to say it's a pretty apt comparison. It's very much a milkshake texture if you are using whipping cream as your source of fat for your shakes.

Prior to starting a keto diet and using keto chow, I had tried other meal replacement shakes in the past like Soylent and Queal (these are not keto friendly). I found these to be edible, but never drinks that I would prefer to real food.

I thought maybe Keto Chow might be "tasty" if you're used to the limited options on a low carb diet (as many keto versions of popular foods are lacking, to say the least). However, I was blown away when I got my sample packs and started to try them.

Keto Chow Flavors

21 Varieties of Keto Chow - Which Are Best?

Chris Bair and the team at Keto Chow really nailed the flavors and texture of Keto Chow. Vanilla really does taste like a vanilla milkshake made with ice cream. Chocolate mint smells amazing and tastes like thin mints. It blows me away considering how small this company started off, that the flavors are so good when large food companies regularly release new products that taste awful.

What's key about Keto Chow's taste and consistency is that it's so good you'll want to drink it, which is important if it's supposed to be an easy meal replacement to take with you on the go, and a healthy option to keep you in ketosis. That said, I'd recommend ordering their sample flavors before you make a large order.

My Top Favorite Flavors

  • Vanilla
  • Raspberry Cheesecake
  • Chocolate Mint
  • Orange Cream
  • Cookes & Cream
  • Root Beer Float

While I didn't find any of their flavors offensively bad, I definitely had my preferences, and have around 6 flavors that I reorder regularly. From reading comments on the Keto Chow subreddit, everyone has their favorite flavors. Some people go crazy for Chocolate Peanut Butter and Mocha while I thought these flavors were simply average.

One small negative in the taste department is that Keto chow does have a bit of a salty taste to it, due to the sodium content to ensure it's nutritionally complete. While you may notice this at first, you get used to it quickly in my experience and won't notice it anymore.

Does Keto Chow Keep You Full?

When you prepare your keto chow, you can customize the number of calories each shake will contain by increasing or decreasing the amount of fat you add to your shake in the form of whipping cream or avocado oil. The Keto Chow team recommends calculating your daily caloric needs so that a shake equals around 1/3rd of your calories for the day. Of course, you can tweak this to your own preferences, but one scoop of keto chow contains a third of your daily nutrients in general.

One great thing about the keto diet and keto chow is that you're consuming lots of fat. Fat keeps us full, so you're unlikely to quickly become hungry again quickly like you might if you're consuming simple carbs. If you do find yourself becoming hungry too soon after drinking keto chow, you can always increase the amount of fat in your shakes to make them more filling. I find that keto chow usually keeps me satiated for a few hours.

Is Keto Chow A Complete Meal Replacement?

Fortunately, unlike many other keto shakes or protein powders, Keto Chow is nutritionally complete, so if you wish you can use Keto Chow as your sole source of nutrition on your diet (of course you will want to do your research and consult with your doctor prior to attempting this). The creator of Keto Chow, Chris Bair himself has used Keto Chow exclusively for 100 days.

I think it's important for something you may be eating on a daily basis to be something you can feel good about consuming and feel confident you're still getting the nutrients you require. While I usually only drink Keto Chow once a day, it makes me worry less about what exactly I eat the rest of the day as I know I'm getting at least a portion of necessary macronutrients from one meal.

Ordering Keto Chow Internationally

Currently, Keto Chow only ships from the United States. If you're in the United States, awesome! Otherwise, you can still order Keto Chow, but be prepared to pay quite a bit for shipping.

As a Canadian, I'm often paying over $50 in Canadian dollars in shipping for a box with 5x21-meal bags, plus the risk of customs duties. That significantly increases the overall cost of Keto Chow, but for me it's worth paying the premium for a quality Keto friendly product.

You'll find in general that Keto friendly foods and products usually cost more than what you'd find on a more traditional diet, so in general, you have to get used to paying more for food when living the 'Keto life'.

My Final Thoughts About Keto Chow

Overall, I find Keto Chow to be a 'must-have' for a keto diet. It makes staying on the diet that much easier with a convenient and easy meal option throughout the day, that tastes great and can satisfy your "sweet tooth" (which can be tough when you're first starting the diet).

Considering how many people give up on a keto diet for reasons like a lack of convenience or food cravings, I would recommend Keto Chow for anyone having trouble staying on the diet.

If you haven't yet started a keto diet, I would definitely include Keto Chow as one of the first products you try. And if you're already on the diet but would like more convenient options for meals, and enjoy milkshakes, then it's certainly worth trying. I recommend ordering a sample pack with a bunch of different flavors so you can find your favorites, and then pick up the larger 21 meal packs.
